Sun Protection Policy
RATIONALE: Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. People of all skin types and of all ages need to protect their skin from the sun to reduce the risk of skin cancer.
OBJECTIVES: To provide and promote sun protection for Show Committee and Society volunteers attending or participating in the Dandenong Show.
STRATEGIES:
- Provide an appropriately sized container of sun protection factor (SPF) 30+ broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen to all Head Stewards – especially those in charge of outdoor sections of the Show. Advise stewards and workers that this is available for their use.
- Advise stewards, workers and volunteers to wear protective clothing at all times when working outdoors. This includes the wearing of a broad brimmed hat.
- Provide Head Stewards with a supply of bottled water on Show Day. This is especially important in horse, cattle or other outside animal rings. Advise stewards and workers that this is available for their use.
EVALUATION: As part of the post-Show evaluation, check that strategies worked and were in line with The Cancer Council Victoria’s recommendations.
